Dr. Kimberly Budill – Livermore National Laboratories
November 8 @ 11:30 am - 1:30 pm
Our speaker this month is Dr. Kimberly Budil, since 2021 the Director of the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, a premier US government research lab. Dr Budil is a Physicist, with a Doctorate from University of California Davis. She will address nuclear fusion as a source of electricity. Nuclear fusion (think hydrogen bomb) is potentially the perfect source of electricity. The raw material (hydrogen) is cheap, abundant, and non-polluting (no carbon dioxide pollution). If we finally harness nuclear fusion, electricity will be very inexpensive and available to all. Dr. Budil has done research on nuclear fusion and is very familiar with progress being made world wide.
So is there a problem? Well it only works in a plasma environment at the temperature of the sun. A nuclear fusion unit could make a rather interesting replacement for your air conditioning unit!
We have understood the mechanics of nuclear fusion since the 1950s but harnessing the process has turned out to be the present day equivalent of the Philosopher’s Stone (prior centuries attempts to turn lead, etc. into gold). However, we do understand the theoretical science of nuclear fusion.
November’s speaker has impressive credentials and the subject matter of her talk concerns an opportunity that may well impact civilization for centuries to come. We very much hope you can attend.
